We were sad to have to cut down one of our Aspen trees last school year. Unfortunately, it was dying, and we were unsuccessful at saving it.This week, the district came and planted another tree. It will be fun for us to watch it grow.

As Independence Day and Pioneer Day celebrations approach, Alpine School District reminds community members that fireworks are prohibited on all school district property. With elevated wildfire risk across Utah this summer because of drought conditions, we encourage everyone to celebrate responsibly and help protect our schools, neighborhoods, and surrounding open spaces from preventable fires.

At the beginning of June, I received a phone call, an email, and a celebration box from Solution Tree recognizing Aspen as a PLC at Work Promising Practices school. Aspen has established a clear commitment to the PLC at Work® process, developed systems to monitor student learning on a timely basis with promising interventions and extensions, and most importantly, shown a positive impact on student achievement in reading data and with our multilingual learners.
A representative from Solution Tree will come and celebrate with teachers on our Professional Development day in August. I am proud of our teachers and support staff for their important work with our students. We are excited about this recognition, and so I wanted to let you know about it. You will see this flag flying under our American flag in the fall!

RISE Award Nominee for December 2026
Aspen Elementary, kindergarten teacher: Stacey Frye
Nominated by Allison Ferrell, parent
My daughter has selective mutism which makes it difficult for her to speak to others outside of immediate family members. Having her in all day kindergarten made us worried if she would talk to anyone or feel safe and comfortable. Mrs. Frye has really worked with us to understand SM and how she can help our daughter feel comfortable and succeed. She is now talking to other kids and teachers. She even recited a poem in front of class, which we never thought she would be able to do. This is all due to Mrs. Frye being remarkable, encouraging and loving towards our daughter.

Employee of the Year: Emily Gray is a vital member of the Aspen team. She has grown leaps and bounds in her two and a half years here and is now rocking the role of head custodian. She is always willing to jump in and do whatever is asked, even the "not so pleasant" tasks. Emily does a fantastic job of managing her sweepers, budgets, orders, all the while keeping on top of her work. She looks ahead and anticipates the needs of teachers, staff, and the PTA. Emily also goes above and beyond with things like monitoring students clean black marks off the hallway floors during our "Scrub Club," which is a favorite recess activity for many students. She also goes out of her way to interact in positive ways with students at lunch and regularly advocates for their needs. We have a unique situation with our three Special Education classes that add work to her plate, but Emily has been flexible and patient. We appreciate all that Emily does for our school and love having her at Aspen!

Our custodial staff has been working hard to deep clean our school, and we have also made some improvements. We had some partition strips installed between the bathroom stalls to give more privacy to students. Also, did you notice our new marquee?

We had a wonderful end of year with our 6th graders. We are going to miss them next year. Students, good luck as you move on to junior high. Don't forget to SOAR! Look for some of the staff in front of Oak Canyon at the beginning of your 7th Grade Day!

Teacher of the Year: Sharla Moyes works hard to create a classroom environment where students feel safe and respected. She accomplishes this through modeling, direct instruction, and targeted weekly practice. She has put a system in place for students to report to her about their current moods and needs so she can provide timely help and remediation. She fosters high levels of academic learning by selectively anchoring multiple engagement points within each lesson. Through these and other efforts, she and her 5th grade team have made great progress toward their reading and math goals. Sharla is also always eager to learn and improve and sets an incredible example for her students of being a lifelong learner. Although she’s one of our newer teachers, Mrs. Moyes has already proved herself to be a valuable asset to our school.
